NEPAL >>

Nepal is a beautiful country situated between the Indian plain and Tibetan plateau. Nepal has the highest mountain in the world - Mount Everest at 8,848 m and yet has areas in the southern part of the country at only 70 m above sea level. This gives Nepal a huge variation in geology, climate and culture. Many visitors come to see mountains – and they are not disappointed as Nepal has eight of the world’s ten highest mountains. Nepal was the birthplace of Lord Buddha and is often thought of as a Buddhist country – but actually Buddhism (three traditions – Mahayana, Vajrayana and Theravada) is a minority faith with Hinduism being practiced by the majority (over 80%). Most Napalis do not distinguish the differences in the two faiths and follow both religious traditions. Nepal has a strong culture and history and has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is also a great destination for wildlife enthusiasts as it has a wide range of fauna and flora and is home to almost 10% of the world’s bird species (500 of which may be found in the Kathmandu Valley). Until recently Nepal was a monarchy but mass protests in 2005 led to the abdication of the last Nepali monarch and the establishment of a federal
democratic republic. The first President of Nepal was sworn in on 23 July 2008.
