HIMALAYAS >>

The Himalaya is the highest mountain range on earth and sections are within Indian Territory including the states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand (formally Uttaranchal). These states border China and Pakistan and due to the border dispute with Pakistan sections of Jammu and Kashmir are not open to visitors. But most of the region is open to tourists and considered safe to visit. It is a spectacular region with pristine natural beauty making it a fantastic area for walking.

Major attractions & cities of this area:
Shimla (the narrow-gauge railway); Leh in Ladakh; Corbett National Park, Dharamsala (the adopted home of the Dalai Lama).

Best time to visit Himachal Pradesh: March to June and October/November
Best time to visit Jammu & Kashmir: May to September
Best time to visit Uttarakhand: April to October

Know Before You Go: to make an informed decision about the destination you are considering visiting citizens should take the advice of their respective governments. For British citizens that is the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The FCO website gives travel advice (health, safety, security etc) for every country. We recommend you look at this before booking any holiday and then again before departure. (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice)
