EASTERN INDIA / OVERVIEW >>

The Eastern States of India include West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand.

West Bengal is a very populous state and its state capital is Kolkata (Calcutta) - considered to be India’s cultural hub. The parts of the state that are north of Kolkata are fertile and intensely cultivated and Darjeeling in the cool mountains is synonymous with tea. To the south are the Sunderbans – home to a population of Bengal tigers.

Sikkim – the tiny state of Sikkim measures just 115 by 65 kms. It is situated to the north of West Bengal and is boarded by Bhutan to the East, Nepal to the West and China (Tibet) to the north. Its valleys and terraced rice fields are surrounded by mountains - including Kanchenjunga the third highest in the world.

Orissa (recently renamed Odisha) to the south of West Bengal is India’s ninth largest state. Most of the population live along the narrow coastal strip and river delta so the mountainous interior contains some of India’s least populated areas – the forested hills that are home to the tribal people of the region. Places of interest include the Sun Temple at Konark and the temples at Bhubaneswar and Puri.

Bihar and Jharkhand are not states that attract many tourists as they have reputations for poverty and crime. But Bihar is the early home of Buddhism and therefore of interest.

Major attractions & cities of this area:
Kolkata (the state capital of West Bengal); Bhubaneswar (state capital of Orissa); the tea gardens of Darjeeling and the small-gauge steam train that operates there; the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve; Bodhgaya (the village where the Buddha attained enlightenment).
