TRAVEL WITHIN INDIA >>

North India covers a vast area so most holidays require a fair amount of travelling. All transfers are individually arranged and at no time will you be grouped together with other customers.

Road
All holidays involve some travel by road. This will be in a modern air-conditioned vehicle with a driver. All drivers will have some English language skills but you must not expect fluent English from your driver (although you might be pleasantly surprised). The quality of the roads in India is very variable – some states are well served and others have dreadful roads leading to very slow transfers. So you need to be prepared for some long journeys although travelling in India is usually fascinating as there is much to see along the way. It is a good idea to think of road travel as part of the experience rather than just a means of getting from A to B and remember, you can ask your driver to stop as often as you like.

Rail
As North India is such a large area and the rail network is good, a journey by train is often a sensible option. India has the largest rail network in the world and despite the distances their trains keep surprisingly good time. Travelling by train also enables you to connect with the general population of India. There are some very good train journeys that can be included in a holiday to this area eg the Shatabti Express (a chair car train) from Delhi to Agra reduces the time from four hours by road to two hours. It is possible to take a sleeper train and travel through the night. The various trains have different classes – we will book the best available which will be an air-conditioned carriage.

In addition to the ‘normal’ trains there are ‘luxury’ trains and ‘toy’ trains operating in India. Luxury trains are aimed at the tourist market and have set routes designed to appeal to visitors. Guests have their private bedroom on the train and all transfers; sightseeing, guides, meals etc are included in the price.

Toy trains are small gauge trains operating in mountainous areas where normal trains can’t function. There is one running to Shimla and another (still using steam engines) operating through Darjeeling. There is also a less well known toy train operating to Matheran, near Mumbai.

Air
For longer distances it may be best to book internal flights. There are many domestic airports throughout North India and if there is an option to fly in order to save a long overland journey we will advise you during the planning stage of your holiday. We have access to a wide number of internal airlines including some of the new budget airlines that are now operating throughout India.
